Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia is on a mission to bring hockey back to Arizona after the Coyotes relocated to Salt Lake City. The franchise will be known as the Utah Hockey Club for the upcoming season but will have a new name in 2025-26. Ishbia expressed his interest in helping bring hockey back to Arizona, emphasizing the importance of having a hockey team in a four-sport town.

In addition to owning the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA, Ishbia has invested in the community by funding a new $100 million women’s practice facility behind the Footprint Center, home of the Mercury. While Ishbia praised the current arena, he acknowledged the need for a new arena in the future. The Coyotes previously played at the 5,000-seat Mullett Arena on Arizona State’s campus.

Despite not confirming any talks with the NHL, Ishbia remains hopeful about the possibility of a new arena being built in downtown Phoenix. The league has not provided any updates on the situation either. Former Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo sold the club for $1.2 billion, marking a significant transition for the franchise.

Ishbia’s dedication to bringing hockey back to Arizona showcases his commitment to the community and sports industry. As the landscape of professional sports continues to evolve, his efforts to revive the hockey scene in Phoenix could have a lasting impact on the city’s sports culture. With a new arena potentially on the horizon, fans can look forward to the return of NHL action in the future.
