Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals star, recently won the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award, and Mark Messier himself congratulated him on this achievement. Ovechkin, who is determined to lift the Stanley Cup once again, revealed his love for cereal in a recent interview with ESPN. The hockey legend made history last season with the “Gr8Chase,” surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record with a current total of 897 goals.
Ovi’s Great Crunch, a limited-edition cereal honoring Ovechkin as the NHL’s goal-scoring king, will be exclusively sold at Giant Food stores in the Washington, D.C., area. Priced at $2.99 for an 18-ounce box, the cereal features Ovechkin in the Capitals’ iconic “screaming eagle” jersey. A portion of the proceeds from cereal sales will go towards The GR8 Chase for Victory Over Cancer, a cause that Ovechkin has been actively supporting to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research. Since scoring his 885th goal, Ovechkin has been donating money for every goal he scores, with Monumental Sports & Entertainment matching his contributions.
This collaboration with Giant Food isn’t Ovechkin’s first foray into the cereal world, as he previously released Ovi O’s in 2019, which quickly sold out. Ovechkin’s love for cereal dates back to his early days in the NHL when he struggled with English and used his native language to communicate with his then-general manager. As Ovechkin enters his 21st NHL season with the Capitals, his dedication to both his on-ice performance and charitable endeavors continues to inspire fans and fellow players alike.
