Alberto Amezcua Seeks a Medal and Olympic Spot at the European Championships in Rome
Accitano racewalker Alberto Amezcua will be aiming for a medal this Saturday and to take a step closer to the Paris Olympics at the European Athletics Championships being held in Rome, running until June 12th.
Trained by Jacinto Castillo, Amezcua is part of the national team, which will be without the two-time world champion in the discipline, Álvaro Martín, as well as his teammates Diego García and Paul McGrath. At 32 years old, the reigning Spanish champion in the 20-kilometer racewalk will be participating in his fourth European Championships, boasting a personal best time of 1:19.28 achieved in Budapest last August.
While Amezcua already has the Olympic qualification standard for the upcoming Paris Games, the competition for the spot is expected to be fierce, particularly from fellow athlete Diego García. Amezcua will be competing in the Eternal City starting at 6:00 PM.
Also taking part in Rome is middle-distance runner Ignacio Fontes in the 1,500 meters. The Granada native, whose spot in Paris is not yet guaranteed, will compete in the morning session on Monday in the preliminary round. If successful, he will advance to the final on Wednesday in pursuit of a podium finish.
