Mariners Crush Angels 9-0 with Grand Slam by Crawford
JP Crawford hit a grand slam on Saturday and Bryce Miller pitched nine shutout innings as the Seattle Mariners dominated the Los Angeles Angels 9-0 on Saturday.
Miller (5-5) allowed only three hits for the Mariners, who led the American League West Division on June 1 for the first time since 2003. They have won seven straight series at home and six of their last seven games overall. Seattle (33-27) is now six games above .500, the most this season.
Miller gave up singles in the first and second innings, but never let a runner pass second base. It was the eleventh game of the second-year right-hander’s career with six or more innings pitched and three hits or fewer allowed, and the ninth time this season he has held an opponent to two or fewer earned runs. His eight quality starts bring the Mariners’ total in the Major Leagues to 36.
Three relievers finished the game. Seattle is 29-12 when the starters pitch six or more innings.
Angels starter Reid Detmers (3-6) set up Crawford’s slam in the fourth inning with a two-run double to right field, with a pair of walks that loaded the bases. He allowed four hits and five runs with three hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Detmers, who has struggled this season and recorded a 6.14 ERA, was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake after the game.
Cal Raleigh hit a two-run double to cap off the four-run sixth inning. Luke Reilly hit a home run and Julio Rodriguez added his second RBI single of the game. The Stars’ center fielder has reached base safely in eight consecutive games after a slow start.
Injury update: Angels first baseman Nolan Shanuel missed his second game with a left thumb injury. Manager Ron Washington said Shanuel has improved, but it is not certain if he will return to the lineup on Sunday.
Up next: Angels right-hander Griffin Canning (2-4, 5.08 ERA) closed out the series against right-hander Luis Castillo (4-6, 3.28).
