There were two or three chances for goals. But in the end it was Real Madrid who prevailed against Chelsea and after a 2-0 – first leg 2-0 – reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. The Premier League club, on the other hand, is out and won’t even be able to compete in the Europa League next season. Chelsea are adrift in eleventh place with just 39 points, far from the places that qualify for participation in international competition.
Thiago Silva, the experienced Chelsea defender, has now massively criticized the transfer policy and thus also the new owner of his club after the end in the premier class. The Londoners signed eight new players for more than 300 million euros in winter alone. Based on the entire season, the club has invested around 610 million euros in new staff. The squad consists of around 30 players.
“We have to stop this and come up with a strategy. Otherwise we will make the same mistakes next season,” said the 38-year-old Brazilian in a TV interview on Wednesday evening after the second leg. “We had to enlarge the dressing room because it didn’t suit the size of the squad. It’s a difficult time for the club, with a lot of indecisiveness.”
The Londoners were taken over by US entrepreneur Todd Boehly last year. In the course of the great upheaval, Chelsea also parted ways with today’s Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, who had only led the club to winning the Champions League in 2021.
