The Washington Capitals have revealed their new third jersey that nods to multiple eras in franchise history. The Capitals will wear the jerseys during 15 home games this season, debuting them on Oct. 17 against the Minnesota Wild. The red base has been the team’s signature color for decades, with the white shoulder yoke paying homage to the Capitals’ 1970s and 1980s era. The Capitol Dome logo from the 1990s is featured as the jersey’s shoulder patch, while the primary crest showcases the Capitals’ “Screaming Eagle” logo used from 1995-2007, including during Alex Ovechkin’s early years in the NHL.

“It reminds me of my first year. Good days,” Ovechkin shared with ESPN about the new Capitals sweater. “They look cool. I hope fans are going to love it.” The resurgence of the “Screaming Eagle” logo over the past few years has been notable, with the Capitals reintroducing it on their 2021 Reverse Retro jerseys. This marked the first time the logo was featured on a red sweater, with subsequent appearances on the 2022 Reverse Retro jerseys in black, blue, and copper. The third jersey kits also include several Easter eggs honoring the local fan base, with the three sleeve stripes representing the D.M.V. – D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, along with a District of Columbia flag loop label at the back hem.

Washington is gearing up for various activities to promote their new look, including dressing the bald eagle statue outside the Bird House at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in the third jersey. Washington Nationals players will sport “Screaming Eagle” shirts during pregame warmups, while Capitals center Dylan Strome is set to wear the jersey when throwing out the first pitch at the Nationals game against the Atlanta Braves. The jerseys will be available to the public on Oct. 17.
