The Vancouver Canucks made a significant move by acquiring defenseman Erik Brannstrom from the Colorado Avalanche in a recent trade deal. In exchange for Brannstrom, the Canucks sent defenseman Tucker Poolman and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft to the Avalanche.
Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin revealed that as part of the deal, the team will retain 20% of Poolman’s salary. Brannstrom, a 25-year-old defenseman from Sweden, was selected as the 15th overall pick in the 2017 draft. He recently signed a one-year deal with the Avalanche after spending time with the Ottawa Senators. Throughout his career, Brannstrom has played in 266 games, accumulating 69 points with seven goals, 62 assists, and 145 penalty minutes.
On the other hand, Tucker Poolman, a 31-year-old native of Iowa, has faced health issues that have kept him off the ice. Poolman played only three games during the 2022-23 season and has been sidelined since October 18, 2022, due to migraines and neurological problems related to concussions. Allvin confirmed last month that Poolman would not be able to play in the upcoming 2024-25 season due to his health concerns.
Poolman has previously played in 163 games over five seasons with the Winnipeg Jets and the Canucks, amassing 23 career points with six goals and 17 assists. The trade will give him a fresh start with the Avalanche, providing him with an opportunity to focus on his recovery and well-being.
