Witt Jr. Ties in the 9th and Scores the Winning Run; Royals Comeback from 8 Runs Down to Beat Mariners, 10-9
KANSAS CITY, Missouri, USA (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. tied the game with a productive triple in the ninth inning and scored on a fielder’s choice by Puerto Rican Nelson Velásquez to give the Kansas City Royals a 10-9 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday, after trailing 8-0 in the fourth inning.
After a groundout by Venezuelan Maikel Garcia narrowed the gap to 9-7, Witt hit a triple to the left corner. Velásquez followed with a ground ball for the Royals to secure their third walk-off win of the season. Kansas City had its biggest comeback win of the campaign while Seattle squandered its largest lead.
Witt collected three hits, extending his hitting streak to eight games.
Nick Anderson (3-1) struck out two in the ninth to earn the win. Ryne Stanek (3-1) allowed two hits and walked three – two intentionally – in his second blown save.
Seattle starting pitcher Bryce Miller exited after allowing a hit to start the inning and walking two batters to load the bases in the sixth inning. He gave up seven runs – his most since June 4th – on six hits, three walks, and one strikeout.
For the Mariners, Dominican Julio Rodriguez went 3-1 with a run scored. Dominican Victor Robles went 3-1 with a run scored and an RBI. For the Royals, Venezuelans Maikel Garcia went 5-0 with an RBI, Salvador Perez went 3-0 with a run scored. Puerto Rican Nelson Velazquez went 4-1 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
