Colorado forward Valeri Nichushkin is set to make his season debut against the Washington Capitals after being added to the Avalanche’s active roster. Nichushkin, who had been suspended and placed in Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program six months ago, returned to the team recently. Avalanche coach Jared Bednar expressed his excitement about having Nichushkin back and mentioned that the forward is in a good place.

The 29-year-old Russian right winger’s suspension was announced during Colorado’s playoff series against Dallas, marking his second consecutive postseason absence due to off-ice issues. Nichushkin had also left the team abruptly during the 2023 first-round playoff series against Seattle for personal reasons. In May, he was suspended for at least six months without pay for violating the terms of the player assistance program, which offers support for various issues including mental health and substance abuse.

Despite missing Nichushkin and dealing with early-season injuries, the Avalanche have managed a 9-8 record. His teammates, including Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, are thrilled to have him back on the ice. MacKinnon described Nichushkin as a great teammate and player, while Makar noted his positive mindset and hard work during the past six months.

In addition to Nichushkin’s return, the Avalanche welcomed back Jonathan Drouin and Miles Wood from injuries for the game against the Capitals. However, the team is still without Ross Colton and captain Gabriel Landeskog, who underwent knee surgery after the 2022 Stanley Cup win. Landeskog’s return timeline remains uncertain, but his presence on the ice during practice has provided a morale boost for the team.

As the Avalanche inch closer to full health, the return of key players like Nichushkin and the potential comeback of Landeskog could significantly impact the team’s performance moving forward. The depth and talent of the roster, combined with the resilience shown in the face of adversity, bode well for Colorado’s prospects in the upcoming games. Fans eagerly anticipate seeing Nichushkin back in action and witnessing the team’s continued growth and success throughout the season.
