the Holiday, although not official. In the night from 13 to 14 January in Russia, New year is celebrated according to the old style. The tradition appeared after 1918, when the country switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian, and all the dates shifted by 13 days, reminiscent of the STRC “Ural”.
“Until the 19th century the tradition was only Christmas. Christmas and New year is generally not particularly distinguished. It was such a complex event. People were just wondering, sledding, spending time with family,” – says senior researcher of the Museum of history of Yekaterinburg Anastasia Pronina.
Festive turmoil emerged later. Fashion came from Germany. The first Christmas tree for their children graced Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova. Then to decorate Christmas trees become rich family of St. Petersburg, and gradually, the tradition spread all over the country. The Christmas tree was decorated with sweets, cardboard toys, candles and cards. Again to celebrate the New year the residents of Sverdlovsk region are not averse now.
