Cyberspace Showdown: Mega AC40 Competition Unleashed
Sailors competing in the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup and the Puig Women’s America’s Cup are getting a taste of the competition through team simulators around the world. Reports of private races being held by teams in different parts of the globe have been circulating, showcasing the dedication and preparation these sailors are putting in.
Recently, America’s Cup Events organized a virtual racing event where teams were invited to compete in a structured environment. With course setting by Ray Davies and Elise Beavis, the virtual races were managed efficiently with Chief Umpire Richard Slater overseeing and advising on infringements and penalties. This event gave a glimpse of the competitive spirit and skills we can expect when the on-water racing kicks off in September and October 2024 in Barcelona.
Six teams, including Emirates Team New Zealand, JAJO DutchSail, Team Australia Challenge, AC Team Germany, Swedish Challenge, and NYYC American Magic, participated in the event. Across 12 races conducted over two days, each team showed improvement and competitiveness under pressure.
Emirates Team New Zealand dominated the first day of racing, securing three wins and maintaining consistency. Other teams like JAJO DutchSail, Team Australia Challenge, and AC Team Germany also claimed race victories, showcasing a closely packed competition.
On the second day, Emirates Team New Zealand continued their strong performance with two wins, while JAJO DutchSail staged a comeback with victories in the next two races. NYYC American Magic showed consistency throughout the day, securing podium finishes in the first four races and eventually winning race 5. Team Australia Challenge also made a strong comeback with a race win.
After the racing, Ray Davies commended the teams for their efforts and highlighted the learning opportunities presented in the virtual racing environment. The camaraderie between the teams was evident, with a focus on training and improving skills for the upcoming AC40 races in Barcelona.
Looking ahead, America’s Cup Events plans to organize more virtual racing events to engage all teams and continue the competitive spirit leading up to the main event. The success of this recent competition sets a positive tone for the future of sailing and showcases the dedication of these talented sailors.
